Fifteen years on from Luis Ocaña in 1973, no Spanish rider had won the Tour de France. In Spain, Pedro Delgado, winner of the 1988 Tour de France and two Vuelta victories in 1985 and 1989, is a veritable star. This immense champion (he wore the leader's jersey in the Grande Boucle, the famous "Mayoyaune", on several occasions) is as much respected for his cycling skills as for his class outside the pelotons.
