Stamps, whether cancelled or not, envelopes with special cancels, postcards, 1st day covers and franking machine impressions, tell the fabulous story of cycle racing, leisure activities and a mode of transport.
THE ORIGIN OF THE STAMP
On 1 January 1849, the first French postage stamp, the black 20 centimes, was available in all offices, ready to frank single letters weighing up to 7.5 grams.
This system has been practised in England since 1840, thanks to the invention of the postage stamp, a small piece of gummed paper bearing the effigy of Queen Victoria, the "One Penny Black", stuck to the top right-hand corner of the envelope, which franked letters weighing less than 15 grams in a way that was sufficiently visible for postal workers to be able to see proof of payment at a glance from the moment it was deposited until it was delivered.
BICYCLES ON FRENCH POSTAGE STAMPS - WHAT AN ART!
More than thirty French postage stamps show bicycles or other velocipedes. We've put together a small selection that will appeal to philatelists and anyone interested in anything to do with bicycles.
Abroad, the publication of postage stamps on the theme of cycling goes back much further. The oldest stamp found to date is a Bulgarian stamp dating from 1931.

It wasn't until 1948 that the Tour de France finally made its appearance in the world of philately.
COMMEMORATIVE STAMPS
In France, the first stamp to feature a bicycle was issued in 1953, to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Tour de France.

L'ORIGINE DU TIMBRE
Le 1er janvier 1849, le premier timbre-poste français, le 20 centimes noir, se trouve dans tous les bureaux, prêt à affranchir la lettre simple dont le poids ne dépasse pas 7,5 grammes.
Ce système est pratiqué en Angleterre depuis 1840, grâce à l’invention du timbre-poste, petit morceau de papier gommé, à l’effigie de la reine Victoria, le "One Penny Black", collé en haut et à droite sur l’enveloppe, qui affranchit la lettre de moins de 15 grammes, d’une façon suffisamment apparente pour que, de son dépôt jusqu’à sa distribution, les postiers puissent constater, d’un seul coup d’œil, la preuve du paiement.
DES VÉLOS SUR LES TIMBRES POSTE FRANÇAIS, TOUT UN ART!
Plus d'une trentaine de timbres poste français montrent des vélos, bicyclettes ou autres vélocipèdes. Un petite sélection effectuée par nos soins comblera les philatélistes et les petits curieux qui s'intéressent à tout ce qui a un rapport avec le vélo.
A l'étranger, la publication de timbres poste sur le thème du vélo est bien antérieure. Le timbre le plus ancien trouvé à ce jour est un timbre bulgare datant de 1931.

Il fallut attendre l'année 1948 pour qu'enfin le Tour de France fasse son apparition dans l'univers de la philatélie.
DES TIMBRES COMMÉMORATIFS
En France, le premier timbre sur lequel apparaît un vélo a été édité en 1953, à l'occasion du cinquantenaire du Tour de France.
